The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Minister Kim Hyeon-Soo, MAFRA) announced that it has started a pilot project to carry out Special Health Checkup for Female Farmers for the first time this year, selecting 11 cities and counties as its recipients.

The project aims to give female farmers access to medical examination on occupational diseases by covering 90% of the cost in consideration of their higher disease prevalence and medical cost* than those of non-agricultural workers or male famers. The health checkup includes 10 medical tests in 5 examination categories covering the musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, fracture and injury risk, lung capacity, and pesticide exposure. 
* Prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions (in 2015): Female farmers 70.7% > Male famers 55.1% > Non-agricultural workers 52.2%, Medical cost for musculoskeletal conditions (in 2015): Female farmers KRW 1,255,000 > Male farmers KRW 928,000 > Non-agricultural workers KRW 304,000 

MAFRA received applications for the project from local governments from 17 March to 15 April and selected the final recipients considering their higher willingness to participate and application for the checkup in advance.

Female farmers eligible for the medical examination can take the checkup at medical institutions designated by Wonjin Institute for Occupational and Environmental Health. Those born in even-numbered years can take both the general health checkup and the special examination under the pilot project. For those born in odd-numbered years, the special health checkup is available only.
