The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Minister Chung Hwang-keun, MAFRA) announced it finally selected 208 new trainees of 2023 「Smart Farm Innovation Valley Youth Startup Incubator Center」which is designed to nurture young smart farm professionals.
The training is a long professional course specialized in smart farms and lasts for 20 months so that young people who are interested in agriculture can start their own or be employed in smart farming. The Smart Farm Innovation Valleys have been running the training program since 2018.
This year, 770 candidates applied with the highest competition rate of 3.7 to 1 (2.7:1 as of 2022). After evaluating the candidates' willingness and goals of starting smart farms, how detailed their farming plans are, and their potential for growth through document screening and interviews, the trainees were finally selected.
The finally selected trainees are aged 31.1 on average with higher percentage of those who have not involved in the agricultural sector before (71.2%). The number of female trainees went up by 8 to 60 (28.8%) and is increasing every year.
MAFRA will begin the training from this September. The trainees who completed the training will be given various benefits including the priority to move in to a rental farm* (Those with excellent performance) in the Innovation Valley. They can also receive a qualification for applying for a smart farm comprehensive fund for youth** and additional points when applying for young successor farmers.
* Smart farms established within the land owned by the local government at the Innovation Valley and rented to the youth for three years
(4 are in operation and 11 additional rental farms tailored to local areas will be established by 2027)
** Loans for facilities for young people who wish to start smart farming will be supported (Up to 3 billion won, Payable in 20 years with a five-year grace period)
Director General Yoon Won-seub of the Agri-food Innovation Policy Bureau of MAFRA said, "We will strengthen policy support including the establishment of infrastructure and supporting fund for start-ups so that young trainees of the Smart Farm Innovation Valley Youth Startup Incubator Center can actually start smart farming and grow into an essential player of Korea's agricultural innovation.
