On November 14, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Minister Chung Hwang-keun, MAFRA) concluded the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Kia Corporation, Shinhan Bank and Greenery Inc. to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the livestock sector. 
 
By concluding the MOU, MAFRA and each company will continue various cooperation to transform the agricultural and livestock sectors into low-carbon ecosystem including through △ the generation of renewable energy from animal manure and △ cooperation in smart livestock projects. Also, mid-to-long term cooperation system will be established to secure voluntary carbon credits through △ research and measurement of carbon reduction effects and △ development of greenhouse gas reduction methodology, etc. 
 
The MOU is the example of cooperation between the government and the business sector in order to address worsening greenhouse gas issue in the livestock sector. By concluding the MOU, Kia Corporation and Shinhan Bank will first support the biochar* production project of the pilot demonstration program to generate energy from animal manure in Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do for 10 years and then offset greenhouse gas emitted from business operation by securing voluntary carbon credits.
* Biochar is a pellet-type solid material produced through heat-treatment of animal manure at more than 350℃. 
 
The facility produces biochar with animal manure, which is one of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions on livestock farms. The facility has been selected as one of key technologies of the agricultural sector for carbon neutrality as it can capture carbon for 100 years and effectively reduce carbon emissions while contributing to enhancing agricultural productivity through soil improvement. 
 
CEO Yoosik Hwang of Greenery Inc. who is running the first voluntary carbon credit certification center and trading platform in Korea said, "There are various types of technologies reducing greenhouse gases in the livestock industry including biochar. Going forward, I will try to continue to promote public-private partnership models by exploring various projects to reduce greenhouse gases in the livestock sector." 

Director General Kim Jung-wook for Livestock Policy Bureau of MAFRA who attended the MOU signing ceremony said, "Taking this opportunity, we will establish environmentally friendly livestock industry through close cooperation between the government and private companies. Going forward, MAFRA will try various ways to reduce greenhouse gases in the livestock sector with the private sector and make success stories."
