The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Minister Chung Hwang-keun, MAFRA) held the "Solidarity Festival with Farmers" on November 10th at Seoho Grass Square in Suwon to encourage and boost the pride of farmers on the occasion of the 28th Farmers' Day.
Since 1996, Farmers' Day has been designated as a commemorative day by the government and celebrated with a ceremony, taking into account the fact that the basis of agriculture and life is represented by the Chinese character for soil (土), consisting of ten (十) and one (一).
This year, given the severe damage caused by agricultural disasters, the Ministry intended to console and boost morale of farmers and organized a planning committee* led by farmers to prepare the event, where over 1,700 participants, including local farmers, agricultural organization leaders, businesspeople, consumers, and government officials, gathered in Suwon. Additionally, events from Suwon and eight regions such as Paju, Yeongwol, Nonsan, Buan, Yeosu, Damyang, Gimcheon, and Gosung were broadcast live (3,600 participants), allowing over 5,300 farmers nationwide to come together.
The festival began with an exciting performance by the Sayoungam Agricultural Cooperative's Wolchul Nanum Hanmadang percussion team, composed of female farmers. The efforts of 160 merit-based contributors* who committed themselves to the development of agriculture and rural areas were recognized, and government awards were directly presented to eight representatives.
The recipient of the highest honor, the Gold Tower Order of Industrial Merit, was Mr. Jeon Dae-kyung, the representative of the Mideum Agricultural Cooperative Corporation. Mr. Jeon has made significant contributions throughout his life, leading the introduction of floury rice, a core crop for food security, and creating an industrial model. He solved the overproduction problem of rice and contributed to improving the food self-sufficiency rate.
On this day, farmers expressed their gratitude for the proactive support from the government, which greatly helped them overcome this summer's disasters, boost their morale, and secure food sovereignty through the export of Hanwoo, or Korean beef, and cultivation of floury rice. They conveyed their hope that the government and the public would rally around the agriculture industry, pledging their interest and support. To boost farmers' sense of pride, it was proposed to create "Supporters of Agriculture and Rural Areas for Win-win Growth."
Minister Chung Hwang-keun expressed that the festival, commemorating the 28th Farmers' Day, became a more meaningful event as it was the largest-ever event organized by farmers themselves. He hoped that this event would console and make farmers in the Republic of Korea, who faced a particularly challenging year due to various disasters and livestock diseases, feel proud.
