The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Minister Chung Hwang-keun, MAFRA) announced that the "Low Carbon Agricultural and Livestock Product Sales Event" will be held from August 11 (Friday) to August 17 at 18 locations nationwide, including Lotte Department Main Store in Myeong-dong, Seoul.
This "Low Carbon Agricultural and Livestock Product Sales Event" aims to raise consumer awareness about climate change and promote the consumption of low carbon agricultural and livestock products. Alongside low carbon hanwoo (Korean beef), Lotte Department Main Store will also sell low carbon agricultural products such as leafy vegetables, apples, and peaches. The Low Carbon Agricultural and Livestock Product Certification System certifies products originating from farms that apply low carbon agricultural techniques and emit fewer greenhouse gases than the average emissions (e.g., 10% reduction for livestock products). This certification has been in place for agricultural products since 2012 and for livestock products since 2023. In the first half of this year, 27 hanwoo farms received low carbon livestock product certification. Retailers such as Lotte Department Store and Olga Wholefood have already contracted with certified farms to sell selected products. In addition to this sales event, the Ministry is distributing a booklet showcasing certified farm cases and cooperating with consumer organizations to support the sales of certified products. Inquiries from interested distributors continue to come in. During the second half of this year, additional hanwoo farms wishing to obtain certification will be recruited, and efforts will be made to increase the supply of low carbon livestock products. Starting next year, the certification scope will expand to include pork and dairy products, aiming to enhance value-based consumption.
