On May 13, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Minister Chung Hwang-keun, MAFRA) held "Korea Kimchi Festival" to promote good qualities of Korean Kimchi and increase exports at "the Curve," a shopping mall located near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
At the event, different types of Kimchi of Korea including Baechu (Napa Cabbage) Kimchi, Chonggak (Whole Radish) kimchi and Gat (Leaf Mustard) Kimchi were introduced. Various events including the Malaysian celebrity Chef Wan's Kimchi making experience with participants attracted attention of local consumers joining the event.
"Chef Wan" who demonstrated how to make Kimchi explained local people's reactions by saying, "Korean Kimchi is not only good for health with anti-cancer and sulfation effects but goes well with Malaysian food, thereby increasingly gaining popularity among local consumers."
A local person named Muhammad Ashraf who attended the Kimchi making event said, "I have been highly interested in Korean culinary culture since I watched a Korean tv series 'Mr. Queen' of tvN. I am so glad to make Korean traditional food Kimchi by myself and wish that more people get to know the beauty of K-Food."
Meanwhile, Korea's agri-food exports to Malaysia are going up by 12% on average every year, from 114 million dollars in 2018 to 180 in 2022. Various activities to support exports including local large distributors' promotional marketing events, consumer experience events, SNS marketing, etc. contributed to increasing consumption of K-Food in Malaysia.
On May 12, a day before the event, the 1st contact for the export of halal Hanwoo beef from Korea to Malaysia was signed. Based on this, it is expected that about 6 million tons of Hanwoo beef (about 2,500 cattle) will be exported a year, and 1,875 tons, over the next three years.
In order to increase exports of K-Food including Kimchi, Hanwoo, strawberry, ramen, beverages, etc. MAFRA will ▲ diversify distribution channels from the existing local hypermarkets to small and medium retailers, convenience stores and online channels, ▲ create new demand with new varieties including apple watermelons, Kings Berries‧ 'Altaking' strawberries, ▲ explore markets in second tier cities such as Penang and Kota Kinabalu, outside of Kuala Lumpur, ▲ explore new customers by participating in Malaysian International Food & Beverage (MIFB) exposition and ▲ promote halal certification by cooperating with the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM).
Minister Chung Hwang-keun of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs who attended the event said, "It is my great pleasure to attend this meaningful event promoting good qualities and distinct characteristics of Kimchi, a representative traditional fermented Korean food, in this year which marks the 40th anniversary of the Look East Policy between Korea and Malaysia. I wish Korean Kimchi becomes better known to people of Malaysia so that they can be more familiar with Kimchi in their dietary lives. I will spare no effort to provide support so that various K-Food including Kimchi can be loved by a growing number of Malaysian people."
In addition to the event, MAFRA plans to hold promotional events of Korean Kimchi at 42 local hypermarkets (AEON, K-PLUS Food Market) from May 1 to 31 in order to promote consumption of Korean Kimchi.
