Minister Chung Hwang-keun of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs visited Guinea and Guinea-Bissau in West Africa from June 25 (Sunday) to June 30 (Friday) and discussed ways of cooperation for food security in Africa by transferring Korea's agricultural expertise including "K-Ricebelt."
Guinea and Guinea-Bissau consume rice as a staple food but do not produce enough rice to meet the required amount for consumption. As a result, they are importing a huge amount of rice and wish to cooperate with the Republic of Korea to enhance their rice productivity. Korea will distribute high-yielding and high-quality rice varieties to Africa and support infrastructure and technological training through the "K-Ricebelt project." The project will be implemented in 7* African countries including Guinea beginning this year and Guinea-Bissau's participation in this project as a observer is currently being reviewed. * Ghana, Gambia, Guina, Senegal, Uganda, Cameroon, Kenya
Minister Chung Hwang-keun will build trust in relationships with high-level officials of Guinea and Guinea-Bissau so that the "K-Ricebelt" project led by the Republic of Korea can be smoothly implemented in those countries, while actively transferring Korea's experience and expertise for agricultural development of Africa.
Minister Chung Hwang-keun said, "Africa is a huge continent with the world's youngest population and great potential for growth. As this is my second visit to Africa, following last year's, I hope my visit can serve as an opportunity to come up with more detailed agenda for cooperation in the agricultural sector, in the run up to the Korea-Africa Special Summit to be held next year."
