The 3rd Shuttle Economic Cooperation Team, dispatched by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Minister Chung Hwang-keun, MAFRA) to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, headed by Vice Minister Han Hoon, announced that it signed 8 memorandums of understanding (MOUs) in smart farm and food sectors at the "Korea-Saudi Arabia Business Roundtable" on September 11 (Monday). The Ministry was able to confirm Saudi Arabia's keen interest in Korean smart agriculture and food through business-to-business meetings and agri-food tasting events that began in the morning. As a result, meaningful achievements such as signing of the MOUs worth of $50 million were made.
The 3rd Shuttle Economic Cooperation Team, which is jointly promoted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and other government ministries, has carried out activities to expand its presence in Saudi Arabia in earnest with exporting companies in the fields of smart farm, food and plant equipment. At the "Korea-Saudi Arabia Business Meeting" held together with the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), 30 Korean companies with excellent technologies in smart farms (12 companies), food (4), and plant equipment (14) had a total of about 270 one-on-one business meetings with 30 companies of Saudi Arabia, reaching 30 million dollars' worth of business contracts.
At the same time, agricultural products (stevia tomatoes) produced at smart farms, Korean agricultural products for export (shine muscat) and processed products (red ginseng candy, Ramen or noodles) of the Republic of Korea were displayed outside the business meeting area, bringing about high interest of local companies participating in the business meeting. Participants from Saudi Arabian companies who tasted K-Food themselves were surprised at and highly appreciated the taste of K-Food, giving a green light to expanding the export of K-Food+ to the Middle East in the future.
In the afternoon, officials from the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia, 26 Korean companies and 60 Saudi Arabian companies had the opportunity to strengthen the bilateral economic cooperation at the "Korea-Saudi Arabia Business Roundtable" which began with the opening remark of Vice Minister Han Hoon. At the Roundtable, 8 MOUs worth of $50 million related to the export in smart farm and food sectors were additionally concluded. A total of 6 MOUs in the smart farm sector were concluded including 2 MOUs concluded by Woodeumgee Farm which gained attention of Saudi Arabian people with stevia tomatoes, while 2 MOUs on export of K-Food were concluded including the one by Samyang, which is well-known for its Spicy Chicken Noodle Bowl. In addition, the Ministry of Investment of Saudi Arabia introduced its policy for companies that wish to enter the Saudi Arabian market and Korean smart farm companies* with experience of entering the Saudi Arabian market shared difficulties they faced and how they overcame such issues, drawing attention of participants. * Dream Farm: A contract worth of $120 million to establish the smart farm complex in Saudi Arabia was made (In June 2023)
Vice Minister Han Hoon said, "I could see myself high interest in and demand for Korean smart farm and food of the Middle East through this event. We will provide full support so that K-FOOD+ including smart farm and food can take the lead in newly making waves in the Middle East." On September 12 (Tuesday), Vice Minister Han Hoon had a meeting with Vice Minister Al Mushaiti of Environment, Water and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia and discussed how to strengthen cooperation between the governments in relation to smart agriculture.
