Genetic Resources of Korean Dairy Cattle Are Exported to Mongolia
Sejong, 19 December 2025— With regard to the export of genetic resources (semen and embryos) of Korean dairy cattle to Mongolia, quarantine negotiations between the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the General Authority for Veterinary Services (GAVS) of Mongolia were completed on 10 December, which opened the way for genetic resources of Korean dairy cattle to be exported to Mongolia.
As part of the collaborative project in the field of animal husbandry between the Republic of Korea and Mongolia, the MAFRA worked together with the Rural Development Administration (RDA) to have discussions with the Mongolian authorities about exporting the genetic resources of Korean dairy cattle to Mongolia.
Korean dairy cattle produce an average of 32 litres of milk per head per day, ranking eighth globally. Genetic resources of Korean dairy cattle had already been exported to developing countries such as the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal and the Kyrgyz Republic. The genetic resources are being used in livestock improvement projects to enhance milk productivity in those countries.
Mongolia has strong interest in introducing the Republic of Korea’s high-quality dairy cattle genetic resources. A delegation from the Mongolian General Authority for Veterinary Services and the National Livestock Genetic Resource Centre visited the Republic of Korea and signed an agreement on export quarantine requirements on 10 December. The Mongolian delegation also signed an agreement on exports and technical exchanges to strengthen public-private cooperation. The first batch of exports of the genetic resources is expected to begin in the first half of next year.
