Status of Implementing Quarantine Measures Against Avian Influenza (AI)
- Establishing and implementing quarantine measures against AI to prevent the outbreak of Avian Influenza (AI), minimize the damage from spreading and contribute to development of livestock industry
- Since the initial occurrence in Korea in 2003, 1,055 cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have occurred at 11 occasions since 2018, and recently, 109 cases in 10 nationwide regions occurred from November 26, 2020 – April 6, 2021.

Implementation of Quarantine Measures Against AI (Major Duties)
- (Preventive Quarantine Activities) In addition to preventive quarantine activities such as regular monitoring of poultry farms and livestock facilities for diseases, disease prevention education and promotion and inspection on poor quarantine targets, conduct simulated quarantine training and inspect emergency response preparedness
- (Intensive Quarantine Control Zone) Designate habitats for migratory birds with high risk of AI occurrence, places with outbreak history and mass breeding sites as intensive quarantine control zones and reinforce quarantine control (620 eup, myeon and dong as of 2021)
- (Special Quarantine Measures) Due to the concern of AI occurrence with the arrival of wild migratory birds, set winter as special quarantine measures period and operate wild and migratory bird notification system and monisot and inspect farms and livestock related facilities
- (Emergency Quarantine Measures) In the event of an AI outbreak, perform emergency emergency quarantine measures such as controlling movement in the problematic farm and neighboring area, slaughtering and disinfecting according to related regulations, and enforce emergency quarantine measures such as temporary nation-wide halt of transportation and closure of traditional markets
- (Crisis Warning) According to the animal disease crisis management manuals, issue crisis warnings by AI occurrence case in 3 stages (Attention → Caution → Warning), and perform quarantine measures at related institutions
- (Global Quarantine Cooperation) Implement global cooperation in animal quarantine area via international organ activities such as OIE and FAO, and regular symposium jointly held between Korea, China and Japan
