Livestock improvement institutions and farms under the Livestock Industry Act
Background
To secure improved livestock varieties and promote their distribution to farms in order to improve the productivity of livestock farms, upgrade domestic livestock products’ quality and lay the foundation for stable livestock industry
Project Purpose
By repeatedly registering decent varieties, examining abilities, evaluating general and inheritance ability of animals such as Korean cattle, dairy cows and pigs, to select and distribute breeds with excellent hereditary traits to farms, thereby providing high-quality livestock products with competitive edge to consumers
Project Details
Carry out diverse policies to improve livestock
Improvement of Korean cattle and dairy cows: To select Korean cattle and bull calf of farms with good breeding as candidate breeding bull, verify and evaluate present and next generation of them, select breeding bull with excellent abilities and distribute the semen to farms. Korean cow examination project and dairy cow ability examination projects are promoted at the same time.
Swine profitability examination: (Breeding pig farm examination) By performing swine profitability examination, to provide the selection criteria for excellent breeding pig, (Swine improvement network establishment project) To exchange semen between breeding farms to establish national hereditary ability examination system and select excellent breeding pig and supply excellent semen to farms
Breeding stock registration project: (Ability contest) To have a contest for autonomous participation and will to improve breeding of farms, by evaluating and rewarding farms of good breeding through the ability contest on improved traits of animals (Korean cattle and dairy cows) (Linear Classification) To provide selection criteria for selecting and eliminating animals through deliberation and assessment of physical conditions of animals related to profitability
Other livestock improvement support: (Support for traditional animals) To promote regular post-management and improvement project to protect, improve and industrialize breeding recognized as traditional animals (Black goat improvement support) To nurture local governmental livestock research institutions as a black goat breeding improvement supplying institute by building a flock of traditional black goats
